A phased development of two fields located in the South China Sea off eastern mainland Malaysia was planned by PETRONAS. MISC Berhad was contracted to provide an FPSO to serve as the production unit for the phased development of the two fields.

The MT Bunga Kertas was converted and installed with production facilities for crude oil and associated gas, as well as crude oil storage and offloading facilities to handle the resulting combined crude oil and gas production rate from the North Lukut and Penara Fields. The North Lukut and Penara Fields have been developed using a single wellhead platform on each field with infield subsea flowlines to the FPSO.

The FPSO is a converted tanker and moored in close proximity to the two (2) fields. The FPSO supports full gas lift, water separation, fluid treatment systems, gas injection systems, provision for future water injection facilities, hull systems, utility systems, living quarters, control systems and emergency systems.
